NASFF a new era of film making for Pakistan

NASFF a new era of film making for Pakistan

Pakistan is a country with vibrant and energetic youth that is ready to make its mark on the global map. This land is full of opportunities, possessing rich cultural values, heritage, traditions and a prolific ancient history. But unfortunately, it is not being properly showcased to the world. There are so many stories to tell but it is sad that they get buried under negative optics of socio-political disruptions that we are often caught up in.

Therefore, National Amateur Short Film Festival (NASFF) was conceived in November 2020 to address this issue, as a joint initiative of Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and ISPR, so that the talent and creativity of the Pakistani youth could be appropriately harnessed. The platform targets students who choose Film and TV production, and Mass Media Communication as their professional careers, and has since received the attention of thousands of aspiring film makers.

The project aims at seeking domestic ingenuity and creativity leading to capacity building of emerging Pakistani filmmakers and proliferating social media platforms with positive content on Pakistan. ISPR is in the leading role for this initiative and is trying to contribute as much as it can towards youth development.

To initiate the efforts, NASFF invited film submissions on six different sub-themes based on life, history, people, agriculture and entrepreneurship in the country. Under extreme COVID restrictions, webinars and university sessions were conducted with the brand ambassadors of the festival playing an inspirational role for the youth. This year Maya Ali, Hareem Farooq, Bilal Ashraf and Ahmed Ali Akbar have also joined the group of NASFF brand ambassadors.

The scholarship holders belong to different regions of the country and are a testament to the fact that there is no dearth of talent in Pakistan. These young men and women will return to inject the media industry with a fresh outlook and a more contemporary attitude. A very healthy number of 1100+ entries were received from 72 different educational institutes of Pakistan, as well as professional and mobile phone submissions. Such a wide array of submissions no doubt lent credibility to the word ‘festival’, making up a cornucopia of colors, diversity and resilience, that is Pakistan.

Various events have been organized to empower the film industry in Pakistan. Similarly, in order to modernize the tourism industry of Pakistan firm steps have been taken. The only thing lacking was a coordinated and synchronized effort that has now been initiated by ISPR. NASFF is a sincere and focused initiative to sow the seeds of excellence in the filmmaking arena to portray the true rising and shining image of the nation to the world. These seeds will be nurtured so that they may grow into healthy and strong plants of the future.

Such initiatives are important for grooming the youth that would eventually contribute towards the nation building. Pakistan Army has always remained vigilant to support different strands of Pakistan’s society for a better future and a better nation.

It’s heartening to see this young talent now getting their scholarship education in the field of film making from one of the best institutes in the world; New York Film Academy in Australia. This is indeed beginning of new era in the field of film making in Pakistan which needs much appreciation and admiration.
