TTP’s Resurgence: A Failed Terrorist Ambition

On 8th April, a roadside bomb blast blew up a military vehicle in northwestern region of Pakistan. The attack resulted in the martyrdom of two soldiers and left four wounded. Later the responsibility of attack was declared by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as Pakistani Taliban. After repeated terrorist attacks since 2023, TTP is struggling to regain its old reign of terror in Pakistan up to no avail. TTP hasmainly exploited political unrest in the country to conduct attacks to further demoralize the nation.

Since its inception in 2007, the group has taken responsibility of a number of fatal incidents which took life of scores of people. The agenda behind TTP’s extremist manifesto is that they believe and practice a very radical version of Islam. The banned outfit has become a major security challenge not only for Pakistan but it also undermines the peace and stability of the region.

A contemporary issue for Pakistani authorities is to deal with the TTP and to maintain sustainable relations with the Taliban government in Afghanistan simultaneously.Since Taliban take over in Afghanistan, a gradual rise in insecurity can be seen in Pakistan.Terrorist attacks in 2022 were recorded at 27% more than of 2021. Similarly, in 2023, it has increased further as the month of January is considered as deadliest duration in terms of number of terrorist attacks in the country. However, the intensity of terrorist activity in post war on terror era is by no means the same as it once was. There are several reasons that have encouraged TTP to work on increasing footprint in the country such as political instability, economic crisis and unrest in state institutions. Those areas which are at close proximity to Afghanistan borderare more vulnerable to threat due to which Khyber PakhtunKhwa (KP) and Balochistan provinces have regularly faced more violence in form of terrorism in last two years as compared to Punjab and Sindh.

Indian engagement with TTP

Indian support for TTP and its engagement with other insurgent groups against Pakistan has emerged as a significant security challenge for South Asia, ultimately effecting regional stability and peace. Indian authorities at different occasions have confessed many times that they are sponsoring and funding Taliban to conduct attacks in Pakistan. Ajit Doval, on one occasion in his speech, has mentioned that India is funding Taliban to conduct attacks in Pakistan particularly in Balochistan. He further said that Taliban are the mislead poor entities and they’re working to get paid. India can simply pay funds to Taliban and they will work for us. Indian assistance to TTP includes weaponry, finance and training as well safe heavens to their commanders in India- all of which aid in carrying out strikes against Pakistan. Reason behind India’s support to TTP is to exploit the political vaccum and security related vulnerabilities in Pakistan. Another reason for sponsoring Taliban to conduct proxy attacks in Pakistan is that India intends to portray Pakistan as a failed state caught between terrorism and instability and the same narrative they are propagating at international level to isolate Pakistan and push it again to FATF gray list.

Pakistan’s Armed Forces and their Role

Pakistan Army has successfully eliminated the menace of terrorism through unyielding hard work spanning over decades. The Law Enforcement Agencies in collaboration with Pakistan Army have evicted terrorists and restored peace in the country in general and Tribal areas in particular.

To ensure safety of the country and settle the challenging situation, Pakistan army has adopted a more secure strategy to secure the border from influx of terrorist. The fence barrier it is erecting along the western border, a 2,640-kilometer land boundary separating Afghanistan and Pakistan that goes through hard mountains, heavily dense forested valleys, and narrow rock tunnels, is nearly finished. Two sets of chain-link fences are divided by a 2-metre (6-foot) area containing concertina wire coils. The double-fence, a distance of 3.6 meters from the Pakistani border and 4 meters on the Afghan side, is equipped with security cameras and infrared sensors. In addition, approximately 1,000 forts are being built across the border to boost security. The self-help Pakistan army will cost around 500 million dollars which is one of a unique and low cost security system in the world.

The fence will not only curtail influx of illegal movement and activities but also decreases maneuvering space for Taliban which is a big achievement on part of Pakistan. It has created frustration among the terror outfits and has resultantly pushed it to opt for psychological warfare by creating hype of even a small incident to target the world public opinion.
