EXCLUSIVE: Former President Trump said Monday that former FBI Director James Comey and Democrats should be held accountable for years of investigating alleged conspiracy between Trump and Russia now that Special Counsel John Durham has released a report saying that the investigation between Trump and Russia should never have been launched.

“I, and more importantly, the American public, have fallen victim to this long-running and insidious charade started by the Democrats — started by Comey,” Trump told Fox News Digital. “There is a high price to be paid for our country to endure this.”

Durham’s report found that the Justice Department and FBI “failed to live up to their mission of strict adherence to the law” when it launched the Trump-Russia investigation.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Trump said the activities surrounding the FBI’s original Trump-Russia investigation were “a total disgrace,” and said that “public anger over this report is at a level I haven’t seen yet.” seen before”.

“This report has taken a long time because John Durham is a very thorough investigator,” Trump said. “But the result is unequivocal and an absolute disaster in terms of justice.”

Trump added that “the national security implications of what they did are very serious.”

“It turned out to be a gigantic and very dangerous hoax,” he said, adding that he would have “further comment in the near future.”

Durham’s report was released Monday afternoon following his years of research into the origins of the FBI’s original investigation known as “Crossfire Hurricane.” That investigation examined whether the Trump campaign was coordinating with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election, and its report ran to more than 300 pages.

Durham added that his investigation also found that “senior FBI personnel demonstrated a serious lack of analytical rigor with regard to the information they received, particularly information received from politically affiliated individuals and entities.”

“This information, in part, caused and sustained Crossfire Hurricane and contributed to the subsequent need for Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation,” the report states. “Particularly heavy reliance was placed on investigative leads provided or funded (directly or indirectly) by Trump’s political opponents.”

“The department did not adequately investigate or question these materials and the motivations of those who provided them, even when the FBI director and others learned of significant and potentially contradictory information around the same time,” the report states.

Durham references former FBI leadership in his report — specifically former FBI Director James Comey and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

Durham’s report “does not recommend large-scale changes to the guidelines and policies that the Department and FBI now have in place to ensure proper conduct and accountability in how counterintelligence activities are conducted.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital responding to Durham’s report, the FBI said:

“The conduct in 2016 and 2017 that Special Counsel Durham investigated was the reason the current FBI leadership has already implemented dozens of corrective actions, which have been in effect for some time now. Had those reforms been implemented in 2016, the missteps identified in the report could have been avoided,” the FBI said. “This report emphasizes the importance of ensuring that the FBI continues to conduct its work with the rigor, objectivity and professionalism that the American people deserve and rightly expect.”
